Madeline and Bob purchased a wooded site with a spectacular view of Smith Rock State Park.
They wanted a home that could be built by members of the family and community. A straw bale
construction workshop was organized in conjunction with local builder, Bill Hull, for the
remainder of the project. Our office provided the design for a passive solar hybrid home in
straw bale construction with a picture-perfect view of Smith Rock to the North. The southern
exposure provides passive solar heating with daylighting, augmented by vented skylights in the
Great Room. The 1950 square foot footprint is both spacious and cozy. The entire project was a
great learning opportunity, made possible by the owners’ ceaseless enthusiasm and
magnetism, drawing forth many helping hands that contributed of sweat equity on a tight
budget. The results reflect the mindfulness and dedicated teamwork that brought a spectacular view to life.
